Portuguese ships were known for their ability to survive attack, however, the ship was no match for the strategic surrounding and attack by the Dutch and British off the coast of Mozambique in 1622. Supposedly, there were more shots fired at the São José during this run-in than had ever been recorded in history for a single ship. The ship carried nine chests overflowing with thousands of silver Spanish coins, called reales. What made the composition of these pieces of eight so unique is that they were minted in both the old and new world, including the Spanish peninsula and the colonies.

Denomination: 8 Reales

Mint: Potosi

Assayer: Q

Date: 1598-1621

Ruler: Philip III

Framed in 18 Karat Gold Bezel with sapphires

Denomination: 8 Reale

Mint: Potosi

Assayer: N/V

Date: 1598-1621

Ruler: Philip III

Bezel: 18 Karat Gold Pendant with Dot Design, 0.55 ct Diamonds

This is an authentic coin with certificate of authenticity.
